Lewes lion wall plate
£60.00
A tribute to the white lion of Westgate in Lewes, the county town of East Sussex.
It picks up the C19 Sunderland lustre tradition for decorative wall plates. Transfer printed text and image, amber lustre frame and ribbon decoration.
Height: 14 Centimetres; Width: 16.5 Centimetres; Depth: 1 Centimetre
The inspiration is a pub sign lion made in the C19 by Larwill of Lewes, a tinplate worker.
The original is now on display in the Town Hall, and a replica hangs where the pub once stood.
The white lion was the emblem of Simon de Montfort, victor of the Battle of Lewes of 1264.
This lead to the first Parliament to include a House of Commons, a small step towards democracy.
